Bachelor Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences
Overview
Medical laboratory scientists collaborate very closely with physicians and medical laboratory technicians in diagnosing and monitoring disease processes, as well as monitoring the effectiveness of therapy. Areas of medical laboratory training include microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, transfusion medicine, toxicology, and molecular diagnostics.
History
The Bachelor of Medical laboratory science program is offered by the faculty of Allied medical sciences. The medical laboratory science program was first established in 2000 as an associated degree in Medical laboratory science. It was first the faculty of Allied medical sciences to recognize the importance of baccalaureate education in medical laboratory sciences and become the pioneer in the transition in the medical laboratory science program by upgrading its education from associated degree to a graduate program, bachelor of Medical laboratory science in Ilam University of Medical Sciences.
Currently (June 2021) there are 138 registered students, namely the students of continuous undergraduate program (4-year bachelor, N= 89) and the students of discontinuous undergraduate program (2 years-associated degree + 2 years bachelor, N= 49), studies in the field of Medical laboratory sciences in the faculty of Allied health sciences.
Facilities
We help students gain a solid understanding of the principles of professional practice, laboratory outcomes management, and laboratory administration. Students in our Medical Laboratory Science programs gain classroom, laboratory, and practical experience in five key areas:
- Clinical chemistry
- Normal and abnormal hematology and serology
- Immunohematology (also called blood banking or transfusion medicine)
- Clinical microbiology, including parasitology, virology, bacteriology
- Research theory and quality control principles for clinical laboratory procedures
Our laboratories offer the latest testing and communications technology, so students learn about the equipment used in clinical practice. As students, you will:
- Prepare and interpret laboratory tests from real patient specimens
- Perform chemical tests to analyze blood and body fluid for specific markers of disease
- Match blood for patient transfusion
- Use a microscope to identify and count cells and look for cellular abnormalities
- Detect and identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms that cause infections
- Operate sophisticated technology and develop analytic systems
- Utilize information systems and design interfaces to relay test results to physicians
- Work with other healthcare professionals to monitor quality and improve patient care
Medical laboratory scientists have a wide variety of responsibilities and duties, including:
- Examining and analyzing blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells
- Relaying test results to physicians
- Utilizing microscopes, cell counters, and other high-precision lab equipment
- Cross-matching blood for transfusion
- Monitoring patient outcomes
- Performing differential cell counts looking for abnormal cells to aid in the diagnosis of anemia and leukemia
- Establishing quality assurance programs to monitor and ensure the accuracy of test results
- Overseeing the work of a medical laboratory technician
Our faculty admits students in two different program types including the bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences (continuous and non-continuous).
Please be noted that those who have an associated degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences are eligible to apply for a non-continuous Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Sciences.
